Overview & Attractions

Middleton Hall Trust is a registered charity (No. 1101315) formed in 1980 to restore and maintain Middleton Hall for the benefit of the public as a centre for a variety of cultural, conservation and leisure interests. Annual events include May Day and Christmas celebrations, art exhibitions, concerts and historic re-enactments.

Attractions include a lakeside walk, two walled gardens, a restored smithy, a courtyard craft centre, cafes, book room and souvenir shop. The Hall is licensed for civil weddings, hosts receptions, conferences and other social functions. Private visits with conducted tours are available by arrangement.

History

The earliest buildings date from c.1300, with later additions in the 16th, 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. The best preserved section is the gracious 11 bay Georgian West wing and the impressive 16th century Great Hall (which was restored in 1994).

In the 17th Century the Hall was the home of Francis Willughby, original member of the Royal Society, whose interest in natural history was inspired and encouraged by John Ray, one of Britain's greatest naturalists. After Willughby's death, Ray continued to live at the Hall. Sir Hugh Willoughby, the Tudor explorer, and Cassandra First Duchess of Chandos were born here. The house also has links with Elizabeth I, Lady Jane Grey and Jane Austen.
